Description

The tradition is widely discussed in ancient Sanskrit texts of India and varies regionally. The sacred thread (Upanayana or Janeu) is received by the boy during this ceremony, that he continues wearing across his chest thereafter. The sacred thread consists of three strands, (all common to Srivaishnavas, Smarthas & other Bachelors) joined by a knot known as Brahmagranthi or the knot of Brahma. The three strands symbolize the Hindu trinity-Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma.
